This little community located 40 miles south of Portland, OR, with architecture, farmland and countryside starkly reminiscent of Bavaria, was settled by German pioneers in the 1800s. The town’s Oktoberfest, which started in 1966 as a harvest festival, is now the biggest festival in the Northwest, attracting more than 350,000 people for 4 days of live music, free “Kindergarten” rides and shows, street dancing, arts and crafts, traditional biergarten (and weingarten) and more than 50 food chalets.

Don't let the "oktoberfest" in nearby San Diego trick you. That one is more like a flea market or any other festival. The El Cajon Oktoberfest is the real deal, complete with a live German polka band, great German food, and of course, lots and lots of brown bubbly stuff.

If Munich can push Oktoberfest forward into September, then I guess we can push Oktoberfest back into November to include this popular German Sausage festival. It started in 1961 with a one day sausage festival that 2,000 people attended. It is now ten day celebration of German culture attended by more than 100,000 that was rated the third best festival in Texas. There will be live music, Bavarian entertainment and dancing with more than 40 local, national, and international performers. You will definitely enjoy the German food and beer as well as carnival rides and games.

Dunn proclaims this "one of the most authentic Oktoberfest celebrations in the U.S." It is heavily supported by locals, with a parade featuring traditional attire. It's also one of the longest (Sept. 24-Oct. 2), held on the same dates as Munich's event.

Oktoberfest is the world's largest funfair held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is a 16-day festival running from late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. Locally, it is often simply called Wiesn, after the colloquial name of the fairgrounds (Theresienwiese) themselves. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the original Munich event.

Colorado's biggest Oktoberfest is on Larimer Square (Sept. 17-19 and 24-26), and it is very family-friendly, Dunn says. It replicates the ceremonial tapping of the first keg, substituting Samuel Adams Brewery founder Jim Koch for Munich's mayor. Other touches include 5K and 10K races and a costume contest for Dachshunds.
